This is a seminar presented by Dr. Claire Smetherham about the Leverhulme funded project 'Globalisation – the case of academic staff'. Her conclusions at that moment were: (i) globalisation is an elite phenomenon, (ii) there are two different kinds of academic markets - one where shortages are due to under-supply/recruitment in the UK (due to skills shortages and/or the attractiveness of commercial markets), consequently opening spaces for overseas people, and, another where the UK is simply seen as a good place to be, and (iii) alongside the concentration of funding argument, both forces are likely operating to some degree.

Her interpretations of globalisation in higher education were:

- Presence of overseas academic staff in research/teaching posts in UK universities
- Presence of overseas students on a global basis
- How academics, including non-overseas individuals, work

In the presentation she focuses on the first definition. Four groups of institutions were as the variable (4 way split) - Golden Triangle, Russell Group, Other Pre-92 and Post-92s. The 'GT Effect' was recognised so she said 'globalisation is not to be found to the same extent everywhere in the sector'.

Two main theoretical reasons of claiming 'globalisation is an elite phenomenon' were (1) the concentration of research funding in key institutions & (2) staff markets in HE.

Note: The Leverhulme funded project 'focuses on examining the scale of, and processes at work in, the so-called globalisation of British academia. It explores the implications that this has for the careers and personal well-being of individuals. The methodology involves (i) statistical analysis of a number of years of Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) national staff data, (ii) analysis of quantitative and qualitative data from an on-line survey of overseas staff working at six research intensive universities in the UK and (iii) depth interviews with a sample, structured using key demographic and institutional variables (UoB Website, 2008)'.
